Rose Angels
A new class was added to our rose show schedule in 2007, called the "Tin Can".  The purpose was for the exhibitors to provide an entry in a disposable container which was judged for a trophy and all the entries were donated to Hospice facilities in the community.  We are happy to report we are applying for an ARS "Rose Angel" Certificate to help other rose societies promote this program to bring the joy of roses to those who are unable to attend a rose show.
Four SUV loads of roses, including the tin can entries, were delivered to various care facilities after the rose show. Recipients included Brighton Gardens in Carlsbad, Carlsbad by the Sea Retirement Community, Aegis of Shadowridge, the Life Care Center of Vista, the San Diego Cancer Center in Vista, and the oncology department at Tri-City Medical Center. At each location, residents and staff were delighted to receive the roses, and commented about how special they looked and especially, how nice they smelled. When I returned to pick up empty buckets, I saw roses everywhere, in dining rooms and hospital rooms, and in particular, I saw smiles on the faces of the residents and staff, whose lives were brightened by the presence of these spectacular blooms.  I wish to thank in particular Ivy Bodin and Teri Goar, who helped with the deliveries, and the generosity of our exhibitors, who made it all possible.

Thank you to Emily Schwartz who organized the group of "Rose Angels" who delivered the roses from our show.  We appreciate you, Ivy Bodin and Teri Goar for your selfless devotion to spreading beauty and joy to those who need it most.  From everyone at CCRS - THANK YOU.

Once again, thanks to the generosity of our CCRS rose show exhibitors, the gracious assistance of my friend Kim St. Claire, and the many workers who gathered roses into buckets at the close of the show, we donated several loads of magnificent exhibition quality roses to local nursing homes and assisted living facilities. The recipients included Brighton Gardens in Carlsbad, Carlsbad by the Sea Retirement Community, Aegis at Shadowridge, the Life Care Center of Vista, and three locations in Oceanside: Fairwinds Ivy Ranch, The Springs at Oceanside, and Pacific Place. Although there were fewer tin can entries this year, my buckets overflowed with donations from the parking lot shortly after the show closed at 9:30 am, and these roses filled my SUV with a heavenly scent on the way to the first two locations. I’m not sure how to convey in words how much pleasure these donations provide to the residents and staff at each residence home. At some locations, staff persons distribute and arrange the roses, but at other homes, the residents enjoy arranging and distributing them.  Everywhere, people expressed delight and gratitude that the club shared these very special roses with them.  Thank you so very much to Kim and CCRS for making this possible.
