Jim Delahanty was born in New Jersey in 1935; married Jane Zola (photo right) in 1964. He earned his B.A. at Rutgers University, 1956; A.M. Rutgers, 1957; Ph.D (cand): UCLA 1961; J.D. Loyola, 1979.
Jim taught Government and Law at Mount St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles 1961-2000 and retired in May, 2000.
Jim started growing roses in 1975. He currently grows about 500 roses on a hillside with 7 terraces in Sherman Oaks. The roses include Hybrid Teas, Floribundas, Miniatures , Polyanthas, Chinas, Hybrid Perpetuals, Bourbons, Noisettes and Shrubs. The collection of over 140 polyanthas is one of the largest in the United States.
Jim has written a dozen Award of Merit articles in the last three years, including co-writing the award-winning Catalog for the VCRS Rose Auction. Served as Rose Auction Chair for the last four years. President of the VCRS 2003, and again in 2005. Served on the Board of Directors 2001 to present. Currently serves on the American Rose Society Newsletter/Bulletins Awards Committee. Occasionally exhibits roses in the Dowager, Victorian, Polyantha, and decorative miniature classes. Has registered one sport and has two others in the pipeline. Jim also serves as a volunteer at the Stagecoach Inn Rose Garden.
