CCRS EIGHTH ANNUAL AUCTION OF RARE AND UNUSUAL ROSE PLANTS
By Joel Ross, Development Chairman
Verbal Auction List
The 2008 California Coastal Rose Society Auction of RARE AND UNUSUAL ROSE PLANTS will take place on Tuesday, November 18th in Heritage Hall located at 2650 Garfield Street, Carlsbad California 92009. We have selected auction plants based on their rarity, difficulty in collecting specimens, exotic nature or just plain "collector's appeal". MANY OF THESE PLANTS ARE NO LONGER OR NOT YET commercially available. Some represent 1 of only several dozen plants in existence from cultivars that are currently being rescued from extinction. All these plants are intended to delight your senses and provide pride of ownership.
The AUCTION featuring some 100 plants is divided into a SILENT PORTION (about 65 specimens) and a LIVE PORTION (about 35 specimens). The list of plants will soon be available on the CCRS website. Occasionally, deletions of planned offerings at the time of the Auction must be made due to circumstances beyond our control. However, last minute SURPRISE ADDITIONS are the more common occurrence. The USUAL CREW including Auctioneers John Bagnasco and Bryan Main will stage this year's show. We plan to make it as EXCITING, ENTERTAINING AND AUDIENCE INTERACTIVE as ever.
On the night of the AUCTION, John Bagnasco, using power point, will present pictures of each plant as well as any pertinent commentary before it is sold. The AUCTION will be open at 4:30 pm for those who wish to arrive early in order to more closely examine the plants, make inquiries about them, size up the competition or just socialize with the other Bidders.
The SILENT AUCTION power point presentation will begin at 5:30 pm, cover ALL the offerings in numerical order and end about 6:00 pm. Bidders may move about the room freely between 6:00 and 6:15 pm in order to keep their silent bid(s) current. The minimal acceptable bid increase is $1 (one dollar). A 5 minute warning will be issued at 6:10 pm and a 1minute warning at 6:14pm. At 6:15 the SILENT AUCTION will end. Winning Bidders may pay for all the plants they have purchased at the Cashier's table. Bidders who wish to depart before the LIVE AUCTION my settle their account at this time. Bidders who wish to participate in the LIVE AUCTION may run a tab and elect to settle their account at anytime after they have made their final purchase (but before going home of course!)
We are planning to allow more time between the SILENT an LIVE portions of the AUCTION this year to allow CCRS members sufficient time to organize the SILENT AUCTION results and take care of auditing issues for the Bidders. Your suggestions in this regard have been MOST APPRECIATED AND HELPFUL
The LIVE AUCTION power point presentation will begin at 6:45 pm. EACH of these 35 roses will be auctioned immediately after John finishes his discussion of it. The LIVE AUCTION including the settling of accounts will end before 9:00 pm.
Make sure to bring your truck or at the very least empty your car of non-essentials so that you can transport your purchases home that evening. A word of caution needs to be given here. At times, in the past, when a driver has purchased a few more plants than originally anticipated, some of the passengers have been deemed non-essential for the ride home. "Ride-alongs" should consider themselves fully forewarned about this possibility. Also don't forget to bring along a pruner so that you can create the correct fit of the plant to the space allotted in your vehicle.
CCRS welcomes all Bidders whether or not they are affiliated with ARS Rose Societies. Club members are encouraged to invite friends, relatives, neighbors and coworkers to join in the action. We specifically invite members of other Rose Societies (in the tri-county area and beyond) to attend. We especially welcome members of the public who have interest in these plants. CCRS accepts only cash and checks as payment. HOWEVER, CCRS MEMBERS MAY USE PERSONAL MARKERS as well (another compelling reason to join CCRS now).
As usual, I plan to have those with pick-ups collect and transport the specimens around noon on Tuesday the 18th (you know who you are, so please contact me). I personally invite all of you who are interested to drop by about 1:15pm on Tuesday the 18th to help arrange the room, perform plant and paperwork set up, carry out last minute grooming and be available for the helping to resolve those last minute unanticipated situations. As always, I will provide some pre-prepared sandwiches from Ralphs, small bags of those high but empty calorie yummy chips (the heck with Nutritionists) and non-alcoholic beverages for those who are so kind as to help with the set-up. HOWEVER, TRUTH BE TOLD, THE PARTY STARTS EARLY IN THE DAY SO DON'T MISS OUT ON ANY OF THE DELIGHTFUL FELLOWSHIP THAT WE ENJOY.
I would like to take this opportunity to again thank Joyce Raymer for making the 2007 AUCTION such a smashing success. I deeply appreciate both her volunteering to assume my responsibilities and her devoting the many hours required to bring the AUCTION to a successful conclusion. And of course, I would like to thank all the rest of you who so graciously pitch right in to make the whole affair work so well.
On a sad note, I understand that some of you are on "involuntary rose p.lant restriction". This means that your significant other has unilaterally decided that you have " reached the limit" on the number of rose plants that you may own. You will need to work at having this unfortunate (and I would add categorically absurd, cruel, sinful and probably illegal) situation reversed by AUCTION time.
All of us at CCRS look forward to "talking roses" with you on the evening of November 18th. Please do plan to spend that evening with us to share in the excitement and fun!
